Andrew Mwenge – Wisdom Out Of Africa
“I cannot imagine how many times I have had the advice, ‘just follow your heart’ in the last two months. This phrase sounds attractive and is consistent with the prevailing ethos of our day. We are incessantly called to be in charge of our destiny, dream big, be all that we want to be and conquer our world.
It all sounds good but I know that, if Jeremiah lived in our times, he would not advise us to ‘follow our heart.’ Listen to his diagnosis of the human heart in Jeremiah 17:9: ‘The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?’ (NIV). ‘The heart is the most deceitful thing there is and desperately wicked. No one can really know how bad it is!’ (TLB).
As you face a new week, do not just follow your heart; remember to submit your heart daily to the presence of God and the guidance of Scripture. Commune with God so that your heart is nurtured and guided by the all-knowing, all-powerful and all present God. Only then will your heart lead you to paths that are firm, safe and long lasting.”
